GREENWICH RUGBY PLAYERS LEAD CT TO WIN THE QUAD-STATE ALL STAR CHAMPIONSHIPS

On June 17, the annual Quad-State All Star Tournament for High School youths was held at the landmark Memorial Fields in Mt. Vernon.
Select-side teams from NJ, PA, NY, and CT came to duke it out for the title of the Northeast’s All Star Champions. The event was hosted by the Major League Rugby NY Ironworkers.

Greenwich High School’s girls rugby team entered Saturday’s showdown against Aspetuck Valley Rugby Club as the defending state champion, with the hopes of earning a repeat against the opponent it topped for the title last year.

On a perfect evening for rugby on May 11, a large crowd of parents, students, and alumni were present for Senior Night to honor Greenwich High School girls rugby team seniors Isabella Gega, Natalie Rojas, Sophie Citron, Katie Coyle, Alessandra Perna, and Laura Smego. The Cardinals welcomed their in-state rivals, Southington, for a hard-fought match in which Greenwich eventually emerged as victors, 29-15.

Greenwich High School’s girl's rugby team, the defending Connecticut state champions, began its 2023 season against Morris Rugby Club from New Jersey in a much-anticipated matchup this past Saturday – a game featuring the No. 7-ranked team in the nation, Morris, and the 16th-ranked Cardinals.

Ashley Torres-Brown and Nicole Winn joined the Greenwich High School girls rugby team as freshmen in 2019, which happened to be the squad’s inaugural season and like their Cardinals team, the duo have been forces on the field ever since.
